I need to monitor my servers. My systems run RHEL 5.1 64bit.
I also have some CISCO and Juniper equipment there.
I only interest in SNMPv2 monitoring/traps and the option to load MIB and use those Mibs to trap events ( i dont want to define each ODI to name…) and it would be great if the app can detect the target based on the MIB loaded.
Ah.. the software must be able to allow to http in to (i.e dashboard access)
I was looking for a free solution to monitor my servers without much hussle.
Seems that on the Linux world its a major hussle
I tried:
Zenoss – Free version (CORE) – will not detect the targets even if mibs are loaded. Can only use mibs for traps to help with ODI to name conversion. Yet it has issues with our CSS11501 load balancers. even when all MIBs are loaded it cant detect the proper name for ODI login failure (it just print some ODI long number ID) funny stuff is that the CISCO-SMI.mib is loaded yet it stilll fails. Further more i noticed that somtimes the mibs do not load. still dont get the logic here.
HyperHQ – a mess. could not get it wokring. did not detect anything and really annoying GUI. Removed it.
ZipTie – ZipTie looked like the answer but i noted these guys only tested it on ubuntu/debian. I was able to install the server (While wasting HOURs locating all the missing perl modules it required – not all have RPMs for RHEL – for example NET::SNMP or TEST::XML) – but i could not get the ZipTie Client to run on linux – complained on numoers java errors. So i got here a java guru which noted that ZipTie Client is looking for 32 bit java plugins while the system is 64bit and thus they fail to load…..
Funny that that ZipTie’s Windows client works perfectly well
Anyone got something i can use ? do i ask for too much ???

I’m sorry to hear you had trouble with Zenoss for monitoring your network. I know some of the Cisco devices can prove a bit cantankerous, but did you try our forums to see if anyone had similar experiences? We also just put out our 2.2 release which has quite a few fixes and easier installers, so if you feel like giving us another try, let me know if there’s anything I can do to help.
Thanks,
Matt Ray
